Simple Life Can Help You Make Better Choices
By the time we reach adulthood, we usually realize that life is often made of difficult choices. The choices don’t only boil down to where to apply for a job, where to live, or who to date. Sometimes it can be as seemingly simple as what to eat for dinner, skip a yoga class or not, and whether you should answer this text right now or leave it for some time. Maybe even for an indefinite time.
The Problem of Choice
When talking about a simple life, it is impossible to skip a conversation about the problem of choice.
It is a well-known fact–the more options we have, the less likely we are to choose something and be satisfied with our choice. Ordering a dish in a restaurant that serves thirty-something entrées will probably leave you less confident with your choice than ordering something in a restaurant with less than ten dishes on a menu.
Some argue that that lies in deep fear of making a wrong decision. From the evolutionary point of view, it makes sense–in the past, making a wrong choice could have catastrophic consequences for our survival. And although compared to our ancestors, we live in prosperous times, getting rid of the fear of making a wrong decision is almost impossible.
